He activated the computer panel, and saw that there was a letter from his mother. ~Hmm. I should probably answer that. It's been sitting there for a few days, after all.~ "Computer, take a letter." [Begin when ready.] "Hello, Mother. Has it been six months since I've been to the farm? That's rather difficult to believe. I meant to visit more often during the refit. Problem with that is that my being an engineer means that I got drafted to help on the refit more than many other departments. However, I did very much appreciate the time I spent there. Even if it was only a couple of days. So, how did you manage to convince Aiden and his wife to take over the farm for you? I suppose since they have a son now that a rootless existence isn't quite ideal anymore. In any case, I've been well. I met the First Officer the other day, and let me tell you that was a bit of an experience. I won't go into detail about it; there are more appropriate places for that. We've now left Starbase Geneva far behind, and other than that, I'm not allowed to tell you. Once our mission report gets back to Earth, and when we do, believe me, I'll regale all of you with as many stories as I can, within appropriate and legal limits. Anyway, I'm glad that we've picked up this correspondence again. Let's not let it lapse like it did when I was in the Academy. Your son, Eoin" He pressed a few buttons, and the message was off to its first relay buoy on its way to Earth. It was right around then that his doorchime went off. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Stardate: 2408.07.22 (USS Hades, Deck One, Bridge, ACSO Ensign (JG) Kenneth McKenzie, 08:27 hours) Kenny sighed; The signal was gone, he had tried to find it again, but some how, it has disappeared. He had adjusted his sensors three times and still nothing. He decided that it was best to continue scanning the planet once more. This was getting very interesting, he thought. He knew now that something had happen to the aliens, who's name he could still not pronounce, because of the build-up of gasses. Maybe a bio weapon of some kind, or power plants which had exploded, releasing toxic gasses. At any rate, the majority of the planet was still inhabitable, which was a good sign if they needed to go down there. The sensors glitched, and Kenny's eyes shot over to the screen, what was that? he thought. Did the scanner detect something? he accessed the logs and found something that he had not been looking for, but he knew that it would be interesting. He saw that the scanners had picked up a large deposit of cartilage and bone, floating in space. No, two...three. Multiple objects of the same design. He told the scanners to scan and make a 3d image and the result made him raise an eyebrow. The 3d image was that of a shell, almost tulle like... no, more like that of a bug. It was half the size of a human, and thicker. The fact that there was hundreds of them in space told Kenny that maybe... He scanned for debris, and found large amounts of titanium and other metallic ores along with the empty shells. There was no doubt about it... There had be a ship, or several ships here He also could detect weapon signatures, however, they were so faint to make an identification. He thought that it was time to tell the captain. "Captain." he spoke loud. "I'm detecting what looks like the remains of a ship, possibly also... umm." He looked for the right words. "Discarded shells. Like thoughts of bugs. About the size of Humans. I think there may have been a battle here a while ago." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Bridge - CO - Captain Devan Sash - 0829) After a weeks traveling Sash had decided he was never completely over the awe of the immenseness of space, and how much interesting stuff there is out there. However, he had always been a man of a mission, and he was not about to change that habit now, no matter how interesting a find was, much to the dismay of his science staff. He knew that they were coming close to the end of their voyage, or at least, to closest calculation of the origin point of the signal they'd first seen two weeks ago. He was not surprised that they had found little sign of life between then and now. Even traveling at high warp, one would have thought that in the over 200 years of Starfleet's existence they would have heard from somebody that had been closer. Geneva was on the furthest point of explored space, but six days at high warp, as vast a distance as that was, was not an unthinkable distance to cross for a race as highly developed as the Tch'kairn appeared to be. Although there is always a 'luck factor' in space exploration. One could easily go the wrong way. The CO's thoughts were disrupted by Ensign McKenzie. "Captain, I'm detecting what looks like the remains of a ship, possibly also... umm... discarded shells. Like those of bugs. About the size of humans. I think there may have been a battle here a while ago." Sash stood up and moved over to the science station. "Where?" (reply McKenzie) Sash looked on the small monitor of McKenzie's station. He looked over at his chief tactical officer. "Lt. Trinin, tie into the science station and show me that area of space on the main viewer," Sash ordered, returning to his center seat, but not sitting in it. "And run a tactical scan over the area." (reply Trinin) "Slow to impulse," Sash said. "I want some of the debris transported into cargo bay 3, and see if we can't get those... for lack of a better term, bodies transported to sickbay." Sash tapped his comm badge, "Sash to Wright, I want two people down at cargo bay 3 to go over some debris we're bringing aboard." (reply Wright) He tapped his comm badge a second time. "Sash to sickbay, expect a couple of... I'm not sure what they'll be, but for now let's just call them dead bodies, from a possible battle." (reply Tommashere) With that done he said, "Lt. let's go to yellow alert, just as a precaution." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Sickbay - CMO Angeni O. Windsong-Trommashere - 0830) Angeni was sitting quietly in her office, going through a mountain of paperwork that seemed like it was never ending. Her head was pounding, and she reached into her desk, pulling out a hypo-spray full of Toradol. She gestured to one of the nurses floating about, and she had her sign off on a log and check the medication. She didn't want anyone to accuse her of using narcotics. There had been a few instances of people abusing narcotic-like painkillers onboard. While advances in medicine took away the true addictive nature of narcotics, everyone could agree that the most addictive thing that no one could ever fix was the fact that they took away the pain... Angeni smiled, presenting her neck to the nurse as she felt the gentle pulse of the medication whizzing into her musculature. "Dr. Trommashere, here are the logs from the medic box checks, as well as the outdated/in-date drugs...can I do anything else for you, ma'am?" Angeni held a tight-lipped smile. The back of her neck burned slightly and she rubbed her neck gently. Ever since the Jump kit fiasco, where everything was destroyed or out of date, she had kept the nurses and medics under close supervision...or so they thought. She had changed some things...the lack of formality had definatly changed. While she hated being refered to as Dr. Trommashere, she felt like she needed to have that authority back, and hence forth...Dr. Trommashere. She took the log, scanning it over, and she looked up at the nurse. "Bring me Kit Ten please." The nurse bobbed her head, darted out the room, and came back holding the respective kit. Angeni unsealed it, and she looked it through, a gentle smile on her face. Everything was in perfect order, the way it should've been. She put the Neural Stimulator on its test dock, and she ran it through the paces...everything worked as it should. She zipped the kit back up and handed it to the nurse. Suddenly, she heard the Captains' voice over the comm system. "Sash to sickbay, expect a couple of... I'm not sure what they'll be, but for now let's just call them dead bodies, from a possible battle." Angeni stood up, slipping off her lab coat. "Affirmative, Captain." Turning to the nurse, she smiled softly, "Here comes the fun..." She picked up a padd, handing it to the nurse. "Mind setting up in the back of sickbay, get a few of the biobeds ready..." She tapped her comm badge. "Dr. Trommashere to Dr. Kildare, are you available to come down to Sickbay, please?" (Reply Wendy) "In regards to...uhm...a specific matter of business..." She hoped that she would get the hint that it wasn't the run of the mill 'please sign your paperwork' kind of thing. Angeni pulled out a pair of scrubs from her desk, and she sat a pair down on Wendy's desk, and she waited patiently for everything to come together. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Main Engineering- aCEO- Lieutenant Darla Wright - 0832) Darla nodded as she signed off on the inspection report fro the port side Plasma injector assembly. She had sped up the normal critical systems maintenance schedule so that she'd have no doubt that the Hades was in tip-top shape and therefore as ready as they could be if they encountered the Borg. The very thought of encountering the Borg of all species, was something that sent chills down her spine. There was nothing more repulsive to her than the thought of becoming a mindless automaton; losing all sense of individuality. ~Not to mention the terrible skin conditions that those implants seem to cause.~ she thought to herself as she shuddered visibly with the thought. Her thoughts of assimilation were interrupted by the chirp of her commbadge. =^= Sash to Wright, I want two people down at cargo bay 3 to go over some debris we're bringing aboard=^= She nodded then tapped her commbadge to reply. "Understood sir, they're on their way. Engineering out." She turned and glanced around the room, her eyes landing on her two ACEOs. "Tavik, Mac Liam- You've just volunteered for debris inspection by the captain. Report to Cargo bay three on the double. Do a full battery of tests, materials construction, energy signatures, magnetic fields, the whole kit-and-caboodle." She ordered from across the room. "Hop to it!" --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- USS Hades, Bridge, ACSO Ensign (JG) Kenneth McKenzie, 0833 hours.) "Where?" asked the Captain, rising from the chair. "I'll put it on monitor." Kenny pressed several buttons, accessing the controls that would allow him to put it on the screen. As the Captain issued commands to the crew and called a yellow alert, Kenny turned to him and spoke up. "Sir; I should add that scans show that the weapon particles are so degraded, along with the very little amount of residue on the metal, this "battle" most likely happened hundreds of years ago." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Bridge - CO - Captain Devan Sash - 0834) Unsurprisingly, Trinin's report was thorough. Sash was always amazed at how much the man could come up with, with so little information. Sash wondered just how much the Tactical Chief really knew, and how much was just very good speculation. Still, the CO was not willing to call him on his postulations. Generally, they tended to be correct. He was intrigued to hear that the construction of the ships seemed to be less than their own, but the danger of subspace rifts was definitely not something he was willing to risk at this juncture. Even with McKenzie's assurance that this battle may have happened hundreds of years ago, it did not alleviate any concern that any lasting effects from this battle could be lingering. "Then let's keep our distance Mr. Guarstine," Sash ordered the helmsman. "Only get as close as absolutely necessary. Keep monitoring for any signs of any subspace disturbances. I don't want to linger here to long, but I would like some answers." Ensign T'Voff spoke up from the secondary tactical station. "Captain, I'd like a crack at that material in the Cargo Bay too - if it's alright. If that debris is as old as we guess it to be, the technology we will face won't be this simple. I want to prepare by extrapolating possible advances to this stuff giving us a wider range of possibilty to defend against." Sash looked over at Baylon and then back at the Ensign. "I have no problem with that, as long as Lt. Trinin has no immediate use for you. Keep informed of anything you find out." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (USS Hades - Bridge - aTAC/CSEC - Lt. Baylon Trinin- 0835) Baylon was manning the Tactical I station on the bridge. There wasn't much for him to do at the moment, so he was running a few readiness drills in different sections of the ship, keeping his security people on their toes. Baylon was determined that if they were to encounter the Borg that his security people would be as ready as they could be. His methods weren't draconian, at least not by any normal standard, but Baylon was certain that certain security department personnel wouldn't have agreed with that assessment. The Betazoid security officer glanced over at the tactical II station, where T'Vof was stationed. She had been handling the overall organization and day-to-day running of the department well. He had seen junior officers buckle under much less responsibility. Baylon suspected that her experiences in the Cardassian Labor camps had strengthened her and given her a personal wellspring of inner strength. He was beginning to realize that she was not the sort of officer to let anything fall through the cracks. Her ratings were high, her efficiency good. The only detriment that she brought was a lack of seasoned experience. That would come with time, and in the meantime, Baylon had complete confidence that if she truly needed help, she was smart enough to ask him. As he regarded her, it surprised him how much he missed Ranae. Since her transfer to the Mithrandir, They had sent a few personal messages back and forth between them. They began to space themselves out and Baylon wondered inwardly if ranae had met someone else. The last two messages that he had sent to her remained unanswered and Baylon, always a practical person, was beginning to see the trend that would eventually lead to the complete dissolution of their relationship. T'Vof, although half Vulcan rather than Half Cardassian, had some similar traits to Ranae. Both women were strong and independent. They also shared a certain love of life that appealed to Baylon. He wondered if the similarities in any way were a result of their common Bajoran heritage. It was a complex situation to say the least. Baylon's attention was drawn to the sound of the ACSO McKenzie's voice. "And run a tactical scan over the area." "Aye sir." Baylon replied, then quickly entered the data into the system. A moment later, Baylon was showing the requested section of space on the main viewer. He instructed the ship's computer to highlight the various chunks of debris and bodies swirling around each other in a sort of entangled macabre dance of death. "Scans are showing the debris to have originated from an unclassified class of vessel, Captain. The primary hull components are compressed Duranium and Rhodium alloys. That would make them somewhat resistant to phaser fire." he reported as the data came streaming in." "The debris shows signs of high temperature quantum scoring. Almost as if struck by a multiphase particle beam weapon of some sort. The quantum alignment of the molecules in the affected materials seem to be somewhat rearranged. We'd have to perform a detailed materials analysis to determine exactly how that affected the hull material." I'm not detecting any active power signatures, but there are indications of subspace interference similar to those found by subspace weapons used by the Son 'a and other banned technologies. It's hard to say if they are the remnants of a matter/antimatter explosion or if they are the residual affects of a subspace weapon of some sort." "Slow to impulse," Sash said. "I want some of the debris transported into cargo bay 3, and see if we can't get those... for lack of a better term, bodies transported to sickbay." Sash tapped his commbadge, "Sash to Wright, I want two people down at cargo bay 3 to go over some debris we're bringing aboard." (reply Wright) Baylon activated the THIS holographic display and used it's perfect line of sight to take a good look around the immediate area. The debris that McKenzie had detected was just the edge of the iceberg it seemed. There was a significant amount of debris scattered around the area. In Baylon's opinion more than would have been used in the construction of a single starship. That indicated that there had most likely been a battle of some sort here. How long ago was anybody's guess. It could have been a week, or even hundreds of years. They may not even be a sampling of the technology of the race that they were coming to meet. By the same token they also may not be affiliated with the unknown aggressors either. With that done the captain said, "Lt. let's go to yellow alert, just as a precaution." "Aye Sir, yellow Alert." Baylon reached up and activated the holographic condition status for the Hades. The Yellow Alert beacon activated, bathing the bridge in an intermittent yellow light. "Captain, " Baylon reported, "In addition to the debris we're looking at immediately dead ahead, there is a strong indication that there is enough debris within a half light year area to indicate that there was more than one vessel involved in whatever happened here. The tactical sensors indicate that all the debris in range has the same composition and is showing the signs of the same sort of weapons scarring. I'm not seeing any signs of any other starships types here. So either this was a very one-sided battle, or all the ship's are were of similar design and materials construction." "Additionally, while the construction of the hulls is different than that we currently use it is generally considered inferior to our own hull materials design. The weapon, if subspace in origin, may well be at a similar technology level, but generally would be considered below our current level of technical achievement. It does however, pose a very real danger to use, since subspace rifts and similar aberrations are drawn to warp fields." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Sickbay - CMO Angeni O. Windsong-Trommashere - 0836) Angeni dressed quickly, hoping to hear back from Wendy. Before she was about to leave her office, she stopped, tapping her forehead as she went back to her computer console. She pulled up a message screen, and she hashed out a quick message to Harry, hoping he'd get it before he left for Ten Forward. [Hey there! Duty calls, so I'll probably not be able to make it to lunch, I apologize. Maybe we can get together for dinner later, let me know. Have a good day, Me.] She sent the message off, and as she pulled her hair up, tying it into a tight bun, she also put a surgical cap on. While the 'bodies' had been out in the very dry cold of space for several hundred years, they were probably remarkably well preserved, which made this portion of her job more...interesting. Once exposed to a 'normal' temperature, it was quite likely that any water soluable tissue that was exposed would quickly assume room temperature and would begin to decompose rather quickly. This ment that her and her staff would have to work as quickly as possible to take as many slides, photos, samples, everything in a very short amount of time, which was her reasoning for bringing Wendy in on it. She had one of the Medics run down to the Morgue to let Dr's Cohen and Scott know what was being brought aboard. Medic King returned with the good news that everything was prepared, and that they would be ready to take over and do their thing after she was done. She stepped into the cordoned off area of Sickbay they were going to use. She looked around, checking all the minor things. When everyone was assembled, she knelt down, grabbing a box from underneith one of the surgical stands. She opened it up, pulling out a pair of surgical gloves, and she put them on, passing the box around. "Sterilizers are great, but they don't help much if you have a paper cut and your hand is drenched in something that's wet, sticky, and certainly not yours." Once she was certain everything was ready, she tapped her comm badge. "Dr. Trommashere to Captain Sash. Sickbay is ready for the incoming transport." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Sickbay - ACMO- Dr. Wendy Kildare - 0838) Wendy had managed to work up a little perspiration rushing to get down to sickbay. As she entered she didn't see Angeni anywhere. She wasn't in her office. Then she noticed that the CMO was in The ACMO's office. Wendy wondered what this was all about. She moved quickly and closed the door as she entered. Angeni was sitting in a chair, wearing surgical scrubs. There was another set on her own desk. ~Were they getting ready to perform some surgical technique? ~ Wendy didn't move from the doorway. "So.... what's going on Angeni?" she asked. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (USS Hades - Biophysics Lab - SciO- Ens Harry Doorman - 0839) ~And then we complete the Feldman Equation set with the iteration of the Velar theorem~ Harry was thinking even as he was working on a new set of equations to help refine the resolution of the Fractal event horizon for recreation. His console chirped letting him know that he had a waiting message. He glanced over at the messenger feature and saw that the message was from Angeni. He immediately forgot everything that he had been working on for the last half hour and rushed to open the message. It was simple. [ Hey there! Duty calls, so I'll probably not be able to make it to lunch, I apologize. Maybe we can get together for dinner later, let me know. Have a good day, Me. ] Harry smiled. His day had gotten brighter- not because she had cancelled lunch, that was a bit of a downer, but with the knowledge that she had chosen to send him a message and had indicated that she wanted to spend time with him. It was a sort of Euphoria that had been carrying him along these last few days. He had no reason to think that they wouldn't continue to do so for a long time to come. He hurriedly typed his reply. [ Angeni. That's understandable, duty calls. I probably need the time to work on the equations anyway. I'd love to have dinner tonight, how does 1830 sound? Barring any issues that should work for me. Love, Harry ] (reply Angeni) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Personal Quarters- ACMO- Dr. Wendy Kildare - 0840) Wendy yawned and stretched. Her eyes burned from fatigue, but there was no way she had been able to entice her body into more sleep. Too many dreams of a life she is no longer part of. She had rolled out of bed and padded her way into the bathroom. Looking at the mirror she stuck her tongue out at the red rimmed eyes staring back her. A long sonic shower always woke her up. As she turned on the pulse of the shower her comm channel beeped. =^= Dr. Trommashere to Dr. Kildare, are you available to come down to Sickbay, please?=^= Wendy sighed as she held her leg in place before entering her bid for relief. "Ummm... now? What's going on?" =^=In regards to...umm...a specific matter of business...=^= Wendy took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Something was up, and Angeni didn't want to talk about it over the comm. ~ Must be something big. ~ She looked longingly at the shower. She should probably go now but she had to wake her body up. "Okay," she finally said, "give me a few minutes and I'll be right there." The channel closed and Wendy adjusted the sonic shower. She wouldn't have time for the leisurely shower that she had anticipated. She would have to make this one quick and functional. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Sickbay- CMO Angeni O. Windsong-Trommashere - 0841) "So.... what's going on Angeni?" she asked. Angeni smiled as she watched Wendy walk in. She gestured towards the pile of scrubs on her desk, then she bent down, pulling the booties up further over her boots. "Well...we just came up on what looks like the remains of the Tch'carin ship...and bodies. We're going to go ahead and do the preliminary exam of the remains, and I figured you'd want to get in on the excitement. The scrubs are because I'm not sure what type of condition the remains are going to be in, number one, and number two...how quickly they're going they're going to fall apart. I wanted to be on the safe side...didn't think anyone wanted to walk back to their quarters covered in who knows what." (Reply Wendy) Angeni paused for a moment before continuing. "I didn't mean to wake you up. If you want, you can go back to your quarters. The only reason I didn't speak about it over the comm was because I didn't want anyone outside of here to know about the goings on." She held an apologetic look on her face. She truly felt bad for rousing her. A part of her knew exactly how Wendy was feeling at the moment. She knew the breakup between her and Cmdr. Lemar was hitting her exceptionally hard, and she knew the emotional toll that it could and would take on the body, mind and spirit. "As I said...I'm very sorry, but I couldn't think of anyone else I'd rather be doing this with, new discovery aside." She was being sincere. Even with the initial friction between the two, she had marveled at the fact that things straightened themselves out. It felt great to be working along side someone she actually found she could trust, and work with without feeling as if she was in it for herself. One too many bad ACMO's had her pretty jaded, but she found that she wanted to keep Wendy around for as long as possible. "Whaddya say? Are you in?" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (USS Hades - Main Engineering/Cargo Bay 3 - ACEO Ensign (jg) Eoin Mac Liam - 08:42) "Tavik, Mac Liam- You've just volunteered for debris inspection by the captain. Report to Cargo bay three on the double. Do a full battery of tests, materials construction, energy signatures, magnetic fields, the whole kit-and-caboodle." She ordered from across the room. "Hop to it!" "Aye, ma'am. On my way." Eoin left his diagnostic in the hands of a capable engineer, and started to leave Engineering. He was joined by both Tavik and Wright, as he made his way to Cargo Bay 3. After he got there, he was quite struck by what he found there. Eoin didn't speak much, and just started moving around among the material that had been brought on board, hoping to find something that might give some indication as to who had built the object whose remains were left here. It wasn't until even at least fifteen minutes of looking through the wreckage that it even occurred to him to take out his tricorder. He studied the scans closely, but was interrupted by his superior. "Okay everyone. Listen up. Everybody fall bask at least 5 meters and conduct your scans from that distance. I've requested someone from sciences to come and give us a hand." Eoin nodded, and moved back a bit. He kept on circling the room, however, looking for any sign of a marking or symbol indicative of a written language. After a few minutes, he switched his tricorder over to a symbol detector, hoping to have some luck with that. After a few more minutes, he had some luck. "Lieutenant," he said, indicating a small piece of debris near him, "I've found some markings over here. They are, as of yet, unidentified, but I'm willing to bet credits to cupcakes that they're T'chkairn in origin." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (USS Hades, Deck Six, ACSO Ensign (JG) Kenneth McKenzie, 08:44 hours) Kenny walked down the corridor, heading to Lt. Jericho's Office. The report that Kenny had in his hand in a data PADD contained far more than he thought it ever would. All the information that Jericho had requested, plus more; Kenny himself was amazed. It appeared that the aliens where far more advanced at a time when Human's and most of the Alpha Quadrant was primitive in comparison. Kenny thought about the cites that he had scanned. He knew that the ruins on the ground where only the tip of the iceberg, as it were. Even at long range, the scanning systems of the Hades was excellent. He was able to discover that the cities continued to be underground, and that an extensive cavern network was present, but without getting closer, he was unable to map it, but he knew that he would be able to do that in further. As for the gas, again, with out getting closer, he was unable to get a good reading. It was thick, he knew, and poisonous to Humanoids who need a oxygen/hydrogen atmostfear. The good part was that it was only present in parts of the planet, on the small, south continent. He thought about the shells that he had detected, floating in space for hundreds of years. He wondered about that battle, a battle that had happened a very long time ago. He hoped that the aliens were still alive, he really wanted to meet them... If they were friendly... He pressed the buzzer on Jericho's office door and waited for permission to enter. He smiled to himself; The CSO was going to be please, he knew. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (USS Hades - Deck Six - CO's Office - CSO, Lt. (jg) Jericho Haynes - 08:45) The yellow alert had of course intrigued Jack who had been cooped up in the office poring over paperwork and reports for the early stages of this shift. Ensign McKenzie had been manning the science station on the bridge and so who else would it be who made a discovery that wasn't just scientific and exciting but also momentous? Why not Jericho of course. During a yellow alert all senior level bridge officers were on notice they could be called to duty on a moments notice, should it have gone to red he would have been immediately expected topside. ~You'll have your time in the sun Jack, let Ken have this one. CSO isn't all guts and glory, it's also tedium and reports, paperwork and evaluations along with coordinating the differing labs and experiments. All in all both exhilarating and mortifying in roughly equal amounts.~ A quick call upstairs had borne some fruit as he been monitoring the discovery of an alien battlefield in deep space through the telemetry being fed through the ships data link. Some things had jumped out at him as being of importance and he decided this would be a good time to see just how observant his assistant was and give him an opportunity to gauge the young mans' capabilities. The buzz of the door call let him know the officer had arrived. "Come." (Reply: Ken) "Come in Mr. McKenzie." He gave a wink to the fellow as he came in to let him know not to be taken aback at the formality, forms had to be followed of course but could be skewed a bit to fit the officer in charge if you were confident in your position. He could and had made his weight obvious at times but preferred not to throw it around when unnecessary, if you did you tended to get a reputation as a hard ass which didn't fit him. "Sit down Ensign and give me a brief overview, the high points first." He sat back in the comfortable chair and crossed his legs as he awaited the report. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, Deck Six, ACSO Ensign (JG) Kenneth McKenzie, 08:48 hours) "Come in Mr. McKenzie." Jericho said as Kenny walked in the door. The young Ensign walked in with his head held high, proud, but not arrogant. He aired the typical Starfleet man-at-attention which he was taught at the Academy. He was a little surprised to see Jericho rising his eyebrow and smiling while relaxing in his chair. Kenny ignored this and continued to walk in. "Sit down Ensign and give me a brief overview, the high points first." Jericho said, beckoning Kenny to take a seat with an open palm. Kenny took a deep breath, the sighed. "Well; This report details everything," he said, handing his PADD to Jericho. "But in brief; The planet is a typical Class M, oxygen/hydrogen, 60 degree tilt in the axis, umm..." He thought about his next words. "It's much larger than earth, with 12 major contiants. The planet is also rich with the standard ores of any Class M; Iron, copper, gold, silver, you name it. Very rich, indeed..." Kenny stopped and thought about this. If their attackers were greedy, then that would be a great reason to attack. "I have also found signs of advanced lifestyles. On the continents are hundreds of cities, but I believe that these are only the top of them, there seems to be an exsteive tunnel network underground. I think that they live both above and below ground. However, I have been unable to detect any life signs as of yet, but once we are closer, I should be able to scan the underground tunnels. Although the air is breathable in most area's it seems that parts of it have been contaminated by toxic gasses." (Reply Lt. Jericho) "Also; The Yellow Alert is from the fact that we came across a possible battlefield, but I believe that it happened hundreds of years ago. However, there are a lot of shells floating in space, much like the shells of bugs, you know, back on earth. Teams should be bringing them on the ship now, I believe. Anything else you would like to know, Sir?" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Deck Six , CSO's office - CSO Lt. (jg) Jericho Haynes - 08:49) "Well; This report details everything," Ken said as he handed over the padd which contained his report. "But in brief; The planet is a typical Class M, oxygen//nitrogen, 60 degree tilt in the axis, umm..." He paused for a moment and Jack could almost see the wheels turning in his mind. "It's much larger than earth, with 12 major continents. The planet is also rich with the standard ores of any Class M; Iron, copper, gold, silver, you name it. Very rich, indeed..." He paused again for a moment. "I have also found signs of advanced lifestyles. On the continents are hundreds of cities, but I believe that these are only the top of them, there seems to be an extensive tunnel network underground. I think that they live both above and below ground. However, I have been unable to detect any life signs as of yet, but once we are closer, I should be able to scan the underground tunnels. Although the air is breathable in most area's it seems that parts of it have been contaminated by toxic gases." Jack nodded as he keyed up the padd and began scanning through its contents. Mass spectography of the planet had given off rich readings of heavy metals and water, radioactive isotopes and gases. Photometric readings also contributed to the formerly mentioned data and gave indications of heavily settled areas on the ground. The gases mentioned included sulfur dioxide and radioactive emissions which would make the areas completely uninhabitable to standard life forms. Sulfur dioxide was the result of the decomposition of certain life forms and often indicated emission from subsurface areas where up to hundreds of thousands of years of decomposition had stored up vast vaults of toxic gas. Radioactivity could be naturally occurring in isolated areas but would have to be investigated further, other possibilities of course included mining of radioactive ores, radioactive waste or possibly residue from weapons fire. Sulfur dioxide was a gas that was especially deadly, it was odorless and colorless and a deadly nerve agent which could kill within minutes. Any on the scene investigation should it come to that would have to be with respiratory aids such as a full-face respirator. Readings of the planets tilt and axis were arrived at using readings of the Tch'kairn worlds electromagnetic field. Scans taken to date could not yet penetrate very far beneath the planets crust, the coming days however would make shed more light on Ken's theory of a race that spent much of their time beneath the surface of their world which was easily considered. Power readings, subsurface scans and more would be unfolding in the days ahead. "Very good, now what about the yellow alert? What did you find?" He held onto the padd for now, he would study it more carefully later. "The Yellow Alert is from the fact that we came across a possible battlefield, but I believe that it happened hundreds of years ago. However, there are a lot of shells floating in space, much like the shells of bugs, you know, back on earth. Teams should be bringing them on the ship now, I believe. Anything else you would like to know, Sir?" Jack had a twinkle in his eye as he nodded. "Since you believe you have a rough estimate of elapsed time and considering drift course and speed where do you believe to be the site of the battle? Also since we're on the subject of battlefields I'm going to want some specimens for detailed study, both of the combatants and their equipment." (Reply: Ken) "I want that site narrowed down to within a few thousand kilometers so we can take more detailed scans. While it's nice to have some specimens to work with we're liable to get much more by extrapolating dispersal from the epicenter of the battle which will tell us where to find more debris which has also drifted in different directions." That was a mouthful. "Draw on whatever resources you need to get that nailed down and don't be shy on drafting members of the department whom you might need to see it through ... if they're truly needed." This would be a good test to see how he managed his resources. If he toughed it out with minimal help it would either drag out the results or work him into exhaustion, to use too many would result in inefficiency and a lot of men standing around doing little which wouldn't help him gain any time. Managing manpower with the most efficient time window would look good on his record. (Reply: Ken) "After you get that in order I'll get with the captain on pulling in more data, if I have a solid lock on this I might be able to get him to allow probes or even better a manned salvage expedition. Do you have any questions before you begin?" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Bridge - aTAC/CSEC - Lt. Baylon Trinin - 0850) Ensign T'Vof spoke up from the secondary tactical station. "Captain, I'd like a crack at that material in the Cargo Bay too - if it's alright. If that debris is as old as we guess it to be, the technology we will face won't be this simple. I want to prepare by extrapolating possible advances to this stuff giving us a wider range of possibility to defend against." Sash looked over at Baylon and then back at the Ensign. "I have no problem with that, as long as Lt. Trinin has no immediate use for you. Keep informed of anything you find out." Baylon noted the captain's hesitation and his decision to allow the Security chief to make the decision. He found that a little uncommon, although not entirely unreasonable. "I am capable of handling the tactical situation at this point captain. I believe there is a great deal of Merit in Mister T'Vof's suggestion. If, as she says this is an older battlefield, then certainly there will have been improvements and considering our distance from home, I think it best that we are as prepared as possible." Baylon replied. He turned to T'Vof. "Please transfer all your sensor and tactical systems to my station before leaving ensign. If we should go to red alert, report back to the bridge at once." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, Deck Six, CSO's office, ACSO Ensgin (JG) Kenneth McKenzie, 08:57 hours) "Since you believe you have a rough estimate of elapsed time and considering drift course and speed where do you believe to be the site of the battle? Also since we're on the subject of battlefields I'm going to want some specimens for detailed study, both of the combatants and their equipment." "Well, I believe that we are passing through the battlefield now, or at lest, we are in the area where the debris is floating about in, but I could run a scan for known weapon signatures in an arc to find the actual site of the battle, but since it was hundreds of years ago, who knows how far this debris has travelled in that time?" Kenny said. (reply Lt. Jericho) "As for specimens and items from the debris, teams should be bringing them aboard now, the Captain ordered it before I left the bridge. I could check on the items and make an inventory, or I could scan for the battlefelid?" (reply Lt. Jericho) "I want that site narrowed down to within a few thousand kilometres so we can take more detailed scans. While it's nice to have some specimens to work with we're liable to get much more by extrapolating dispersal from the epicentre of the battle which will tell us where to find more debris which has also drifted in different directions." Jericho stopped to take a breath. "Draw on whatever resources you need to get that nailed down and don't be shy on drafting members of the department whom you might need to see it through... if they're truly needed." "Aye, Sir." Kenny replied. "I'll start by finding out who is working on brining the specimens aboard the ship and direct them to make an inventory. I will also compile a second team to work on locating the battlefield. I will also possibility need the help of Sickbay since we are brining aboard shells, which will most likely have cell tissue, and making a third party to analyse the living, or to be more accurate, non-organic specimen from Sickbay, would help greatly, since that is more their field of work. I believe that this is the right course of action, unless you disagree, Sir?" Kenny was proud with what he just said. It all came to him in a flash after hearing the orders from the CSO. This was his chance to lead and organise several teams, to show his peers and his spurious what he was capable of. "Any thing else, Sir?" he asked. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, Deck Six, CSO's office, CSO Lt. (jg) Jericho Haynes, 08:58 hours) "Aye, Sir." Ken replied. "I'll start by finding out who is working on brining the specimens aboard the ship and direct them to make an inventory. I will also compile a second team to work on locating the battlefield. I will also possibility need the help of Sickbay since we are bringing aboard shells, which will most likely have cell tissue, and making a third party to analyse the living, or to be more accurate, non-organic specimen from Sickbay, would help greatly, since that is more their field of work. I believe that this is the right course of action, unless you disagree, Sir?" He paused a second as he sucked in his chest and gave a hint of a grin. "Any thing else, Sir?" Jack shook his head in negation as he sat back int he chair and keyed up the padd again. "Very good Ensign, get right on it. I'll expect a report by this evening. Dismissed." With that he gave Ken a nod and dove back into the data as the young man walked out. ~A good start, let's find out what can be found out shall we?~ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Cargo Bay 3- aCEO- Lieutenant Darla Wright - 0900) Darla had made the time to head to cargo bay 3 alongside her two ACEOs. There was one aspect of her personality that you could always count on and that was that she was curious. The very thought of seeing something new, doing something new or visiting someplace she had never been had exciting physiological aspects on her person. It immediately made her happy, gave her a glimmer of the day dreaming eye and to be blunt aroused her. She was never really clear on why she got hot when she was studying something new, it was just the way it was. She had started her course studies in archeology, but had decided after spending more time in bedchambers rather than classrooms, that that particular course study wouldn't work for her. She had gone into engineering which had proved to be considerably easier to get things done, although now after all this time, she stood looking at a series of hull fragments that were hundreds of years old. It was as if someone had given here a visual aphrodisiac. Darla took a deep breath, centered herself and strode over to the largest of the hull fragments. He reached out her hand to touch the pitted and cratered surface and was surprised to feel that the material was slightly warm to the touch. This oddity immediately broke the spell of arousal that she was feeling as certainly as a plunge in ice cold water. She reached down and picked up an engineering tricorder that had been left sitting on the deck taking continual scans. The material was recorded as Duranium and Rhodium alloys, neither of which were thermally self-generative. She shifted the type of scan to a quantum level scan and watched as the result jumped well beyond the tricorder's ability to measure the input. Darla knew that they had something unique here and well, she was beginning to feel that familiar feeling of discovery once again. "Not now girl." she told herself in a low mumble. "I'm sorry what was that sir?" an engineer asked, apparently he had realized that she was talking but had not heard what she had said. Darla's face bloomed into a blush. "Ah... Nothing Ensign..." she said with a slight stammer, then she had another idea. "Actually, take a small sample of this material in three cross-sections and ship it to lieutenant Haynes in Sciences." She ordered. "yes Ma'am." Darla turned her back from the debris, trying to refocus her thoughts. ~You are one messed up lady.~ she told herself silently. When she was far enough away from the debris, she tapped her commbadge. "Wright to Haynes." she said, surprised to hear subspace static over the commbadge. She turned back towards the debris and the static increased. ~Hmmm..~ (reply Haynes) "Lieutenant, I'm having a member of my engineering staff take a small sample of the debris material and send it to you for study. The material seems to be comprised of standard Duranium and Rhodium although it is showing abnormal levels of quantum activity, almost as if it is entangled on the quantum level with other particles. I don't have the equipment in the cargo bay to make a detailed study. I've also noted that the material seems to generate a localized subspace interference field." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Deck Six , CSO's office - CSO Lt. (jg) Jericho Haynes - 0901) Ken hadn't been gone long at all when Jack's com activated. =^= ...iht to Hay.... =^= He frowned, that was completely unexpected. There appeared to be a great deal of static on the com channel which piqued his curiosity, what the heck was going on? "This is Lt. Haynes, I'm barely reading you through heavy static, please continue." Pulling up the monitor be upped the gain on the channel as he awaited the reply, when it came there was less static but the volume was fading in and out. =^= Lieutenant, I'm having a member of my engineering staff take a small sample of the debris material and send it to you for study. The material seems to be comprised of standard Duranium and Rhodium although it is showing abnormal levels of quantum activity, almost as if it is entangled on the quantum level with other particles. I don't have the equipment in the cargo bay to make a detailed study. I've also noted that the material seems to generate a localized subspace interference field.=^= The voice belonged to that of the CEO he noted as his mind leapt ahead. Metals that were reacting energetically on the atomic level? With what? A great mystery to start their explorations with, was it the result of weapons used since those materials were relatively inert or had they come into contact with something else? He tore his mind away in time to answer. "Thank you Chief, I'm preparing for its arrival now, please have it delivered to lab 3 on deck 6. Do you require any assistance in the cargo bay?" It wasn't a lie that he was preparing a lab to receive the materials, while speaking with Darla he had tapped out a message to Ensign Culver to drop current investigations, begin decontamination procedures to wipe out any traces that might skew results from this new find and expect his arrival momentarily. (Reply: Darla) It shouldn't be necessary to warn her but good safety measures included good communication, the engineer would understand this. "Watch your radiation readings closely, if the molecular bonds are unstable we could be dealing with anything from gamma and theta particles to something we've never seen before. Duranium and Rhodium are intrinsically ultra-stable due to their density, anything that could destabilize those molecular bonds could be extremely exotic." He was on his way out the door as she answered. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Biophysics Lab - SciO- Ens Harry doorman - 0905) "Let's see what the models look like now, Harry mumbled to himself as he dropped the equations back into the computer." =^=Ensign McKenzie to Ensign Doorman=^= Harry paused in what he was doing and tapped his commbadge. "Doorman here, go ahead mister McKenzie." =^=I'd like to arrange a meeting with the Science Department to analyze the data we took from the battlefield and to understand the debris we took aboard. Meet me at Science Lab One at 9:30 with as many of the Science Department who are free that you can find. Then we shall decide what to do.=^= Harry realized that since he was unlikely to go looking for free scientists, and that almost everyone was engaged in some study of some sort and would be loath to quit it, that probably meant that he'd be the only one showing up to the meeting with McKenzie. "Understood Sir. I'll see you then." (reply Kenneth) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Cargo Bay 3- aCEO- Lieutenant Darla Wright - 0913) =^=Thank you Chief, I'm preparing for its arrival now, please have it delivered to lab 3 on deck 6. Do you require any assistance in the cargo bay?=^= Haynes replied. Darla smiled. "It certainly wouldn't hurt Lieutenant. It's always a bit easier to make discoveries when there's a team on it instead of just a single group of specialists." =^=Watch your radiation readings closely, if the molecular bonds are unstable we could be dealing with anything from gamma and theta particles to something we've never seen before. Duranium and Rhodium are intrinsically ultra-stable due to their density, anything that could destabilize those molecular bonds could be extremely exotic.=^= She nodded even though she knew that he couldn't see her do so. "Understood. I've set up a Radiation Monitoring station. At the first sign of trouble, we'll evacuate the bay. But considering the unusual nature of things, I wouldn't mind if you or one of your staff felt like swinging by and taking a good look yourself. Your training might key you into something that me and mine may miss." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Deck 6, hallway - CSO Lt. (jg) Jericho Haynes- 0914) =^=Understood. I've set up a Radiation Monitoring station. At the first sign of trouble, we'll evacuate the bay. But considering the unusual nature of things, I wouldn't mind if you or one of your staff felt like swinging by and taking a good look yourself. Your training might key you into something that me and mine may miss.=^= "Already on it Chief, I'm on my way down. Please hold off on any up close investigations until I arrive, I'm having some special monitoring equipment sent down." (Reply: Darla) Jack slapped his combadge again. "Culver I want a standard tricorder sent down to cargo bay three tied in with a nucleonic field detection unit and I want it sent now, any questions can wait. How long till I get it?" =^= Won't take any more than five minutes chief to pick up, I'll send it straight down.^= Jack swore as he reached the lift. "If that's the best you can do, don't be late." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Cargo Bay 3- CSO, Lieutenant (jg) Jericho Haynes- 0915) "We're showing very short range interference with the subspace relay between tricorders and the ship's computer. They're still going through, but they are... Well.." She grappled with the correct word, "Delayed.. It doesn't appear that the interference is affecting any of the imbedded ship's computers at this point, or even the local terminals. So far it only seems to be the remote communications aspects that are suffering. I'd hazard a guess that the interference is caused by the strange reconfiguration of the molecular shift maybe?" Brainstorming is what Jack considered it when somebody said something out loud that was half-statement and half-question at the same time, many people were afraid to say something which they weren't sure of thinking they would be frowned on for it... but not by him. ~ Subspace interference isn't a new phenomenon much less short range communications, data transfer a bit more unusual perhaps but still not out of the realm of the ordinary. Delayed though ... now that's a different story.~ He took his gaze off of the pile of debris to look back into her face which was a bit flushed, by her excitement at the find no doubt. "I was thinking about cutting off a few additional slices to see if the readings are uniform, but I decided it might be best to wait for you." He nodded slowly as he looked back at the pile which looked for all the world just like what it probably was, hull plating and bits of a wall section perhaps. "Thanks for waiting, for what I've got in mind the more pristine I can get this stuff the better." He lowered himself to his left knee, his right leg bent with his right arm on the knee as he looked at the debris. "It was beamed in I assume ... I can adjust for that in the scans." He slapped his combadge suddenly. "Culver where is that damn equipment I ordered?" =^= Culver here sir, it's on its way to you. Should be there within a couple of minutes.=^= "If it's not I'll have your hide." He grated before slapping the combadge again and began talking to Darla without taking his eyes off of the mound. "All right chief so what I'm hearing is that our pile of rusty parts (A joke, enough moisture to corrode metal is not readily available in outer space even if the material would react with it) is possibly causing a resistance or shift in the boundary between n-space and sub-space. Judging from the reaction of the comm signal from earlier it's probably not regular but intermittent, as soon as my detector arrives I should know more. Could I see your tricorder please?" (Reply: Darla, Any) Taking the device he scanned it quickly, noting it was far lacking in sensitivity and underpowered to give a thorough all-around picture. If he were to narrow the definitions however perhaps that could be changed but to reset the equipment to her specifications later would probably be forgotten in the rush afterwards. "Thanks." Holding it back up so that she could retrieve it he decided he could force himself to wait for another couple of minutes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (USS Hades - Deck 11, Cargo Bay 3 - CSO Lt. (jg) Jericho Haynes- 0917) Jack stepped into the bay like a man on a mission, he stopped inside the door just long enough to take his bearings and note the bearing of the engineering staff before making his way toward them, he was working up a full head of steam before noticing the pile of debris and that they were at least nominally at a safe distance. Of course it would take some time before he knew for sure what kind of radiation signature it might be emitting or whether it was just an electromagnetic field but he trusted the CEO to know better, she surely wouldn't sound an alarm over nothing. As he passed a rack of equipment the monitoring station came into sight, standard radiation detection unit measuring milirems of radioactive emissions presuming the frequency was within a known standard. And therein lay the rub. "Chief." He nodded at her and her crew as he neared them. "My equipment should be close behind, has there been any other noted effects other than com frequency interference?" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (USS Hades - Cargo Bay 3- aCEO- Lieutenant Darla Wright - 0918) =^=Already on it Chief, I'm on my way down. Please hold off on any up close investigations until I arrive, I'm having some special monitoring equipment sent down.=^= "Will do Mister Haynes. Wright out." Darla said as she slapped her commbadge to deactivate it. She looked around at the engineers that were already busying themselves with the work and sighed. "Okay everyone. Listen up. Everybody fall bask at least 5 meters and conduct your scans from that distance. I've requested someone from sciences to come and give us a hand." There were a few nods and a few replies, but the engineers all fell back to a safer distance. No one balked at her orders. True to his word lieutenant Haynes arrived in a little less than 5 minutes. The man was brutally good looking and Darla had to remind herself that she was going to keep her cool despite the physiological or maybe she should say psychological affects that the prospect of these new discoveries had in store for her. "Chief." He nodded at her and her crew as he neared them. "My equipment should be close behind, has there been any other noted effects other than com frequency interference?" "We're showing very short range interference with the subspace relays between tricorders and the ship's computer. They're still going through, but they are... Well.." She grappled with the correct word, "Delayed.. It doesn't appear that the interference is affecting any of the imbedded ship's computers at this point, or even the local terminals. So far it only seems to be the remote communications aspects that are suffering. I'd hazard a guess that the interference is caused by the strange reconfiguration of the molecular shift maybe?" The last sentence was half-postulation and half inquiry, and Darla didn't really expect Haynes to have a ready answer. After all he'd only just arrived. "I was thinking about cutting off a few additional slices to see if the readings are uniform, but I decided it might be best to wait for you." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Cargo Bay 3 - ATAC Ensign (jg) Lo'ren T'Vof - 0921) Captain Sash had left it to Lt. Trinin to actually dismiss her, seeing as he was the Tactical Chief. Lo'ren, for a moment, thought that was a signal to bring her ideas to him first but she dismissed it. No point in taking things to Trinin when addressing the Captain also informed the Tactical Chief. She was doing things the right way around. She'd transfered the data from her console and called up another Tactical officer to take her place - they were at a Yellow Alert after all. She beat her retreat and stopped off in her quarters for a tricorder she had jerry-rigged at the Academy - she had originally been an Engineering Major and it paid-off once in a while. She'd also tied her 'jerry-corder' into her private console and set that to run extrapolation parameters. Later she'd run those into a holo-program to get an eyeball at what they might be up against today. ~Shoulda been a scientist some days, Mutt.~ She walked into the cargo bay and saw Lt. Haynes speaking to Darla Wright, an engineer Lo'ren knew more by sight and senior staff meetings more than anything else. She also saw several engineers and scientists standing back from the debris aas they scanned. ~Something funny about this stuff?~ Lo'ren knew very well that this lot would normally be all over a find like this. ~Archeaologists, all of them - or tinkerers at least.~ Darla Wright was talking to Jack Haynes, "I was thinking about cutting off a few additional slices to see if the readings are uniform, but I decided it might be best to wait for you." Lo'ren could have quipped at that, but the seriousness of the work they were all embarking on lead her to keep her tongue, for the moment. "Lt. Haynes," Lo'ren smiled up at the handsome scientist, feeling a bit dwarfed. She nodded at the Chief Engineer, who was more on her level. "Lt. Wright. I've come to join the... excavation team." she couldn't resist a small stab at humour at least. "I heard from Mister Mackenzie that this stuff is a couple of centuries old and I asked to examine it with the possbility of learning what kind of tech we'll be up to today. The Captain had no objections and so here I am." (reply Wright, Haynes) Not knowing who would be in charge at this moment she threw out a general question. "What do we have that I didn't get on the Bridge from Mackenzie?" (reply Wright, Haynes) She listened as all the pertinent information was relayed. ~Stand back from the mutation causing radiation... good choice.~ Considering her options she thought caution might not be a bad choice at the moment. "Can I get a look at the scans we already have? It would save me going over things twice." She left out that it also saved her from getting nearer than she needed from the get go. ~Some of these folks may need some radiation treatment sooner rather than later.~ (reply Wright, Haynes) Lo'ren took a quick look at what she got in the way of scans and nodded "I want to send some of these up to the console in my quarters, is that possible? I've got a program ready to run up there that I've extablished to do some of the extrapolation work for me." (reply Haynes, Wright) "Ah, I see, well I'll store my scans and take them up later. It will take me a little longer, but I'd rather take longer than save time and risk losing my information." She flipped a switch on her 'corder and set it to store everything, meanwhile thinking she might need an extra storage chip before she was done, with all they had laid out here. "Where can I start?" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Science lab One - SciO- Ens Harry doorman - 0922) Harry stepped into the science lab, carrying a PADD and little else. His attempt to locate other available scientists had been, much as he'd predicted, in vain. Everyone was already deeply engrossed in their work and Harry had learned a long time ago that interrupting a scientist while they were formulating or postulating was more dangerous that calling a Klingon a cry baby. He noted with detached interest that several of the monitors were displaying raw data taken from the Battlefield scans. He nodded to McKenzie as he entered the compartment. "Hello Sir," Harry said in greeting, "Sorry but it looks like I'm the only 'free' scientist on the ship at present, everyone else claims to be much to busy to attend our seminar." He explained ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Cargo Bay 3- aCEO- Lieutenant Darla Wright - 0925) "All right chief so what I'm hearing is that our pile of rusty parts is possibly causing a resistance or shift in the boundary between n-space and sub-space. Judging from the reaction of the comm. signal from earlier it's probably not regular but intermittent, as soon as my detector arrives I should know more. Could I see your tricorder please?" He explained. "Sure." Darla replied, then handed the Science officer her Engineering Tricorder. Haynes ran a scan, frowned and held the tricorder back up to her. "Thanks," She took it with a nod and a "You're most welcomed." reply. Before either of them could go much further with their discussion, they were joined by Ensign T'Vof of the tactical department. ~Not the person I would have expected to see. ~ Darla thought. "Lt. Haynes," Lo'ren said with a smile before nodding to Darla. "Lt. Wright. I've come to join the... excavation team." "I heard from Mister Mackenzie that this stuff is a couple of centuries old and I asked to examine it with the possibility of learning what kind of tech we'll be up to today. The Captain had no objections and so here I am." ~Ah so that's the reason.~ Darla thought, ~Okay seems reasonable.~ "Well you're certainly welcomed." Darla replied. (reply Haynes) "What do we have that I didn't get on the Bridge from Mackenzie?" Darla decided to let Haynes answer that question, since he was the scientist among them and probably had a better idea than she did. (reply Haynes) "Can I get a look at the scans we already have? It would save me going over things twice." "Sure, They're stored over on the central Bay terminal." Darla replied, then hitched a thumb to the terminal that was port side of the bay, near the wall. (reply Haynes IYW) "I want to send some of these up to the console in my quarters, is that possible? I've got a program ready to run up there that I've established to do some of the extrapolation work for me." "You can, but we're experiencing subspace interference from the fragments. Some of your data could be corrupted." The Engineer explained, "I'd send it over a hard link personally." "Ah, I see, well I'll store my scans and take them up later. It will take me a little longer, but I'd rather take longer than save time and risk losing my information." She flipped a switch on her 'corder and set it to store everything. "Where can I start?" Darla looked at Haynes. "Well Mister Haynes?" she asked, knowing that it was he that had recommended that they all keep their distance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Cargo Bay 3- aCEO, Lieutenant Darla Wright- 0929) Darla stood by watching as the Chief Science Officer chewed out his subordinate for his tardiness. He then turned around and apologized when he realized that he was in the wrong. That was something that Darla could admire. Mac Liam had discovered some symbols that he claimed to be a language and which Darla thought would be worthwhile to record. Apparently Haynes had a similar idea and voiced it before she could do so. ~just as well, ~ she thought~ not like it really matters.~ Haynes started up the scanner and while most of her engineering team crowded around the device hoping to gain a glimpse of what they were seeing, She simply tied her PADD into the relay and watched, although with a bit of a telemetry delay, the same material from her relatively safe position. The data was unlike anything she had ever seen before and well beyond her scope of experience. She didn't have the slightest clue what she was looking at. So she just nodded when Haynes muttered "Interesting" and then proceeded to increase the scanning intensity and gather even more data. "It will take several minutes to get a full pass at this level then I'll move in for a full power scan." he commented. "Okay" Was all she could say, since she still was clueless as to what it all meant. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- end compile
